Seeing Through the Solidity of Thoughts with Vova Kuperman

To register, please visit Vova's website.

Seeing through the solidity of thoughts and emotions

This meditation retreat takes place in Crestone, Colorado and holds a dedicated space for a deep and introspective immersion into life below the surface and into a mind-body significantly more subtle than form.

When thoughts and emotions lose their solidity, there is no more mental labyrinth to navigate – consider the implication of this.

Prior meditation experience not needed

We will explore meditation as entering into a living relationship with oneself, assist the subconscious in discerning imagination from reality and discover the ease in the nervous system when stress-driven thoughts and emotion dissolve without any effort.

Intention

Arrive with the intention to work sincerely and to pour your heart into discovering and developing an inner stamina and composure that is capable of holding, softly allowing and witnessing the arising and passing energies of what is named as thoughts and emotions.

Structure

The following questions will serve as a structure for self-discovery and meditation work during a focused time at the wonderful Vajra Vidya Retreat Center in Crestone, Colorado. We will inquire into these questions by directly witnessing the answers in the body, without relying on prior knowledge.

Prior to Meditation

  • Perspective: Self-Improvement as a form of self-inflicted violence.

  • Meditation is not about silencing the mind, on the contrary it is about learning how to listen to thoughts and understand them.

  • Spiritual bypassing—a misguided form of spirituality—may deaden emotional access by falsely striving for a “neutral mind.”

  • Entering into a living relationship with yourself – relating not to a mental construct of self, but to the actual, living human being.

  • Giving accumulated knowledge its proper domain – is knowledge a “middle man” in relationships?

  • Is there a relationship between self-image and the nervous system?

  • Cultivating a mind that is free of internal conflict – no emotion possesses an internal split where a virtuous “better half” attempts to correct its inferior counterpart.

  • Emotional Freedom: an emotion is able to flow without friction, telling its complete story without internal resistance..

  • Recognizing oneself as a continuation of humanity.

  • Understanding Self-Esteem / Becoming an independent thinker.

  • Meditation – not a mechanical practice nor a technique.

The Relation Between Thought, Mind and Body

  • What is a thought beyond an image?

  • How does thought travel in the body?

  • How does thought create sensation?

  • With what speed does thought energy move?

  • Is there a relationship between thought and electricity?

Understanding the Thinker / Observer

  • Observing how the self arises from memories.

  • Witnessing the relationship between the thinker (self) and thoughts, emotions, feelings and sensations.

  • Sensing how the brain manufactures artificial intelligence that is self-aware (the self).

  • Considering the possibility that the nature of even the most intense thoughts and emotion may be more mechanical than living.

  • Learning to deescalate the charge and importance of a thought-emotion-feeling-sensation.

  • If the self is made of thought, is it actually alive?

  • Does thought have a center that says “I”? Does this “I” have a human face / voice?

Navigating the Labyrinths of Thoughts

  • Is imagination 3-dimensional?

  • When an image is visualized, does it have width, height, length or depth? Is the space around it also visualized?

  • Is the distance between the image and the observer also imagined?

  • Are thoughts spatially organized in mental space? Does the distance between thoughts exist?

  • Is the observer also a part of imagination?

  • Is the sense of time also a part of visualized space? How do we discern projected future vs. projected past?

  • What is the relationship between a thought and an emotion? What makes one thought more important than another?

  • How does the thought-created space/time bind to attention?

  • Do thought-emotion energies accumulate in the body’s energy field? What are the implications of this?

  • Can a strong emotional charge be released without action, causation or change to the external circumstances?

  • Is it possible to completely abandon all prior knowledge during introspection?

  • Is it still necessary to seek a way out if the thought-created labyrinth loses it’s solidity?

Troubleshooting / Fine-tuning Meditation

  • Short meditation drills with check-ins, feedback and possible suggestions for course correction

  • Exploration of inner experiences, witnessing wealth of information in the seemingly insignificant observations

  • Partner Work: “Assisted Meditation” in the exploration of muscle tensions

As the body begins to relax and the nervous system settles, we naturally become more available to that which has been within us all along.

When was the last time you had several days without a long list of commitments? In a world that constantly asks us to do more, think more, and keep moving, it can be difficult to remember what it feels like to simply be.

This retreat is an invitation to slow down, relax, soften and return to yourself? Together, we'll step away from the pace of everyday life and create space for deep rest, presence, and quiet reflection. As the body begins to relax and the nervous system settles, we naturally become more available to the wisdom that has been within us all along.

Throughout the weekend, we'll explore gentle practices that support greater ease, clarity, and well-being, including:

* Teachings and explorations inspired by contemplative wisdom traditions

* Yoga, including Restorative Yoga

* iRest® Yoga Nidra

* Guided meditation and silent sitting

Together, we'll explore ways to:

*  Relax deeply in body, heart, and mind.

  • Release unnecessary physical tension and habitual patterns of holding.

  • Meet thoughts and emotions with greater compassion and curiosity.

  • Cultivate an understanding of the mind and develop a friendly relationship with it

  • Discover a deeper sense of presence that is always available beneath the busyness of everyday life.

  • Rest in your True nature.

Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, seeking renewal, or simply longing for time to reconnect with yourself, this retreat offers a supportive environment to pause, listen deeply, and remember the peace that is already here.

You were never meant to carry this life alone. Beneath the surface of everything, there is a current — a living intelligence that can move through you and illuminate your life.

What would it feel like to be genuinely fed from the inside? Not sustained by effort or willpower, but nourished by your body’s quiet wisdom, the warmth of an open heart, and the steady refuge of presence.

This retreat explores what it means to let the Divine move through your full humanity — grounded in the body, open in the heart, moved by something greater than yourself.

Chöd Retreat with Khenpo Jigme

Venerable Khenpo Jigme

Chöd is a profound Vajrayana practice for cutting through ego-clinging, fear, and attachment. Through this practice, we learn to work directly with the obstacles and patterns that keep us bound in suffering, transforming them into the path of wisdom and compassion.

Chöd is especially associated with Machig Labdrön, the great 11th–12th century Tibetan yogini who founded and transmitted the Chöd lineage. Her teachings emphasize cutting through self-clinging at its root and bringing fear, difficulty, and attachment onto the path of awakening.

During this retreat, Khenpo Jigme will guide participants in Chöd practice through Jamgön Kongtrul’s Chöd sadhana, and offer teachings to support a deeper understanding of its meaning and purpose.

The reading transmission of the sadhana will be given on Friday, December 11th during our 1st session.

Ani Lodro's Treasure Teachings New Year's Retreat

Ani Lodro Palmo warmly invites you to a silent New Year retreat devoted to meditation, gentle yoga, restoration, and the profound treasure teachings of Padmasambhava found in Treasures from Juniper Ridge.

Click Here to Register for Ani’s Retreat

This 6 day 5 night retreat begins with dinner at 5pm on Wednesday, December 30, 2026, and completes with lunch on January 4, 2027.  Our four full days together will follow the schedule below, except for January 3, which will be a hot springs outing to Hooper Hot Springs. Each day includes a daily Gentle Yoga session and morning meditation session lead by Linda Stuart.

As one year comes to a close and another begins, we are offered a natural moment to pause, reflect, and return to what is essential. Rather than approaching the New Year simply through resolutions or outward change, this retreat invites us to begin from within— to recognize the nature of mind, release habitual patterns, and renew our connection to wisdom, compassion, and awakened awareness.

At the heart of the retreat will be teachings drawn from Treasures from Juniper Ridge, a collection of profound terma teachings attributed to Padmasambhava. Preserved within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition and revealed for future generations, these teachings offer remarkably direct and practical guidance on meditation, awareness, devotion, obstacles on the path, and how to integrate spiritual practice into everyday life.

Padmasambhava’s instructions continually point us beyond the complicated stories we carry about ourselves and toward the awareness that is already present beneath them. They remind us that awakening is not something distant that must be created, but something to be recognized, cultivated, and embodied within the circumstances of our lives.

Entering a new year with these teachings offers an opportunity to see more clearly what can be released, what deserves to be nurtured, and what remains when our habitual grasping begins to soften. This retreat includes guided meditation, silent sitting, gentle yoga, healthy vegetarian meals, practical teachings, and contemplations designed to support a meaningful transition into the New Year.

The Text: Juniper Ridge's secret teachings become a profound spiritual antidote to modern times: it widens our horizons, softens rigid identity, and opens our hearts and minds to a reality that is luminous, interconnected, and what we have been searching for on the path. Through these wisdom teachings, we learn how freedom, liberation, and happiness are possible, even amid incredible hardship and cultural challenges, speaking to our modern circumstances and minds that can feel tangled in confusion, discouragement, distraction, and self-doubt.

Although there are no specific requirements for this retreat, a beginner's knowledge of Buddhism is recommended, such as having some understanding of the Four Noble Truths, some experience in meditation, and any practice including mindfulness.

Summary

In Dzogchen practice, also known at the Great Perfection, we as practitioners do not try to stop or control thoughts, but relax into the mind’s natural condition, allowing thoughts and emotions to arise and dissolve naturally through self-liberation. Dzogchen is one of the most direct meditation practices of Tibetan Buddhism, designed to reveal our mind's already enlightened and pure nature.

In Mahāmudrā practice, also known as the Great Seal, we learn to rest without fabrication, allowing stillness and movement, clarity and awareness, to be recognized as inseparable aspects of mind’s nature. Through the union of shamatha and vipashyana, this recognition gradually becomes more stable and effortless.

This course is for those wishing to deepen their understanding and practice of Dzogchen and Mahāmudrā, with an emphasis on recognizing and stabilizing in the natural state. Through these teachings and practices, we come to recognize the pure nature of mind: primordial, luminous, empty yet vividly aware, and unaffected in its nature by passing thoughts and emotions.

Turning more directly toward the profound view and practice of Dzogchen, we will draw primarily from Padmasambhava’s Treasures from Juniper Ridge and Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche’s As It Is. The teachings will explore the nature of mind, the recognition of awareness, and the relationship between meditation and the naturally present wisdom at the heart of the Dzogchen tradition.

Through commentary, guided reflection, and interactive discussion, we will offer an accessible way to approach these profound treasure teachings as living instructions for recognizing our own experience and bringing the view of Dzogchen into meditation and everyday life.

Zoom sessions will be held Saturdays 10:30am - 1:00pm with a 20 minute break.

Requirements and study assignments

Discover Our Interconnectedness

We come to realize that the cells within the individual body contain the illumined life as the silent primordial ground. It arises as light and expresses itself as form.

This intimate embodiment of the cells is a knowing within, quietly alive. It is not something you reach for, it is already here. It is the felt sense that arises from within the cells themselves. Both intimate and immediate. One then recognizes that the individual body and the great universal body are one and the same.

In this retreat, you will experience a silent container with

  • Guided meditation

  • Transmission

  • Q&A

  • Supportive and caring community

Meditation & Myriad Worlds: A Retreat Exploring Buddhism’s Immense Vision of Reality with Ani Lodro Palmo

Ani Lodro Palmo

Welcome to a retreat that explores the profound changes of our time and reorients them within Buddhism’s vast vision of reality—an evolutionary, expansive, and transformative understanding of who we are and the universe we inhabit. In the midst of uncertainty, we are invited to ask: Are we ready to question the narrow ways we have been taught to experience ourselves and the world?

Rather than presenting human life as isolated, material, and self-contained, the ancient Tibetan Buddhist texts reveal a living cosmos of many dimensions, many realms, and many kinds of beings, all arising in dependence upon mind, perception, karma, and awareness.

Tibetan Buddhist sutra presents cosmological systems—including those of the individual way, the universal way, Kālacakra, and Dzogchen—not merely as outer descriptions of the universe, but as invitations to loosen our fixation on the small, habitual world we take to be absolute.

In this way, Myriad Worlds becomes a profound spiritual antidote to modern times: it widens our imagination, softens rigid identity, and opens our hearts and mind to a reality that is luminous, interconnected, and far more mysterious than we have been taught to believe.

For those of us feeling trapped in loneliness, anxiety, alienation, or the exhausted patterns of modern life, Buddhism’s visions of reality point toward another way of being.

When we no longer see ourselves as separate, cut off, and confined within a single fixed story, the causes of so much suffering begin to loosen. The Buddhist path suggests that confusion, mental affliction, and even forms of embodied distress are deeply tied to how we perceive and inhabit reality; as that perception opens, greater balance, vitality, meaning, and compassion become possible.

This retreat will include yoga, meditation, and the prophetic teachings of Tibetan Buddhism, which can help us break beyond the mental boxes that keep us small and rediscover the spaciousness and sacred depth of our own experience. The connection between cosmology, mind, and the arising of worlds comes at a timely and necessary point in our human evolution.

Material from this retreat is drawn from a variety of sources, including Jamgön Kongtrul’s sacred text, “The Treasury of Knowledge”, which encompasses the entire Tibetan Buddhist path, “enshrining all the wisdom of Tibet”.

Milarepa: Teachings on the Remarkable Life of a Tibetan Yogi with Ani Lodro

For more information, please email vajravidyacrestone@gmail.com

The Life of Milarepa — A Path of Courage,

Transformation and Freedom

Depiction of Milarepa done by the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa

We warmly invite you to a one-day or a six-day retreat focused on the life and teachings of Jetsün Milarepa, one of Tibet’s most beloved yogis and a cornerstone of the Kagyu lineage.

Milarepa’s story is a profound opportunity for us as spiritual practitioners to renew our hope, courage, and confidence in the path. He is a living demonstration that freedom is possible—even amid incredible hardship and cultural challenges, speaking to our modern circumstances and minds that can feel tangled in confusion, discouragement, distraction, and self-doubt.

Milarepa’s life shows that our challenges do not have to be obstacles; they can become the conditions that offer transformation and liberation. During this retreat we will explore key passages from Milarepa’s biography, and turning points of his life, and integrate the teachings through meditation and practice. We will also draw from Milarepa’s songs of realization—direct, and luminous expressions of awakened mind—teachings which are intimate instructions.

All are welcome. There are no prerequisites for  either retreat. For those interested in reading Milarepa’s biography, “The Life  of Milarepa” by Tsangnyon Heruka is recommended. The Songs of Milarepa have  also been published separately by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche and Choygam Trungpa which include  commentary from these two profound teachers of the Kagyu lineage.

MILAREPA 6 Day Retreat Schedule

This 6 day 5 night retreat begins with dinner at 5pm on Thursday, March 19th, and completes with lunch on March 24th.  Our four full days together will follow the schedule below, which includes a daily morning Yoga session and an afternoon meditation session lead by Linda Stuart. Click here to find more information about Linda Stuart.

A Pillar of Light: The Living Art of Being Divine & Human

This retreat is about bridging the worlds, learning how to walk in this life with an open heart and an awakening mind, living in harmony with what is, and gently bridging the gap between being an embodied human and a being of light and presence.

We will explore enjoying and caring for this raw and beautiful experience of being human, and arriving at the doorway of your own goodness and wellness from the inside of yourself.

It is about walking through the world with an upright presence and an open, tender heart, allowing kindness to move in and around you, and learning how to function as an open-hearted being in this world.

We will be held in a field of silence to support deep inward listening, with times for teachings, questions, and shared inquiry woven throughout the retreat.

“One of the most calming and powerful actions you can take in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul. Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times. The light of the soul throws sparks, sends up flares, builds signal fires, and helps proper matters catch fire.

To display the lantern of soul in shadowy times—to be fierce and to show mercy toward others—are acts of immense bravery and necessity. Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it.

There can be no despair when you remember why you came to Earth, who you serve, and who sent you here. The good words we say and the good deeds we do are not ours—they are the words and deeds of the One who brought us here.”
— Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés

Together, we will explore what it means to be a pillar of light in this world, a present, divine human being in this life, awakening your true presence, tending your human life, and shining from the inside out.

“Wherever I stand, may I be the soul of that place.”
— Rumi

Losar Mahakala Retreat

Please email us at vajravidyacrestone@gmail.com for more information.

Protector of Our Lineage

In preparation for this Losar Year of the Fire Horse, we will hold a Mahakala retreat, focusing on the main protector of our Kagyu tradition, especially in the form of Bernagchen Mahakala, the “Black Cloak,” the personal protector of the Karmapas and a principal protector of the Karma Kagyu school.

In Vajrayana, Mahakala is a dharmapala, a protector of the Dharma and its practioners, and a wrathful manifestation of enlightened compassion, often described as arising from Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig) or Vajradhara.

We turn to Mahakala to:

  • Dispel outer obstacles – illness, harmful conditions, natural disasters, and disturbances,

  • Pacify inner obstacles – fear, depression, anger, jealousy, and doubt,

  • Cut secret obstacles – subtle habits of ego-clinging and confusion that block direct recognition of our own nature.

In our protector supplications we invoke “Lama, Gonpo, Yermepa.” Lama refers here especially to the Karmapa as our root guru and, through him, the Kagyu lineage as a whole. Gonpo is Mahakala, the main protector deity of this lineage. Yermepa refers to the yidam deities, the intimate meditation forms of awakened mind. Calling on “Lama, Gonpo, Yermepa” together reminds us that guru, protector, and yidam are inseparable aspects of one awakened activity supporting our practice.

As some teachings explain, this is a way of remembering that guru, yidam, and protector are one taste: different expressions of awakened mind acting through blessing, realization, and protection.

Mahakala Biography

From the Buddhist side, Mahakala is understood as a fully enlightened wisdom deity, appearing in fierce form to subdue negativity and protect the Dharma. He is often depicted dark blue or black, wreathed in flames, wearing a crown of five skulls symbolizing the five poisons transformed into the five wisdoms, and trampling on obstacles to liberation.

In the Kagyu tradition—especially in the Karma Kagyu—Mahakala is regarded as the main protective deity of the lineage, intimately connected with the activity of the Karmapas.

Guru Rinpoche Konchog Chidu Retreat

Please email us at vajravidyacrestone@gmail.com for more information.

Guru Rinpoche Retreat

Konchog Chidu

Our first retreat focuses on Konchog Chidu – “The Embodiment of the Precious Ones” or “The Embodiment of the Three Jewels”, a Guru Rinpoche terma cycle revealed by the great tertön Rigdzin Jatsön Nyingpo (1585–1656).

Konchog Chidu is regarded as a complete practice:

  • It gathers the Three Jewels and Three Roots into one mandala of practice.

  • It contains ngöndro, outer, inner, secret and most secret instructions.

  • It is fully in harmony with our Karma Kagyu lineage, and has been upheld and practiced by great Kagyu masters.

In this retreat, we rely on Konchog Chidu as a bridge between our present condition and the mind of awakening. Through this practice we:

  • Purify obstacles that block the path,

  • Receive blessings that make the mind soft, clear, and workable,

  • Deepen our connection with the Three Jewels and with Guru, Yidam, and Dakini as the living Three Roots.

As Guru Rinpoche promised, in these later times those who remember him, call his name, and recite his mantra with faith will be swiftly protected and guided. This commitment to us allows “Om Ah Hung Benza Guru Pema Siddhi Hung” to be a direct connection to Guru Rinpoche in this degenerate age.

Guru Rinpoche Biography

Padmasambhava, Guru Rinpoche, the “Precious Guru,” is the great Vajra master who brought Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century. Invited by King Trisong Detsen, he helped establish Samye, the first monastery in Tibet, and opened the mandala of Vajrayana to his twenty-five main disciples at Chimphu.

He is revered as an emanation of Buddha Shakyamuni and the source of the Nyingma school, and his blessings are cherished in all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Through his activity he tamed obstructing forces, turned local deities into Dharma protectors, and hid countless treasure teachings (terma) to be revealed later, exactly when beings needed them.

Guru Rinpoche is a living presence—a guru, protector, and wise friend who responds directly when we supplicate him with faith.

Tertön Jatsön Nyingpo Biography

Tertön Jatsön Nyingpo (1585–1656) was a great Nyingma master and tertön of 17th-century Tibet. He is remembered as a vidyadhara, a bearer of profound realization.

Tradition recognizes him as a reincarnation of Nyangben Tingdzin Zangpo, a close disciple of Guru Rinpoche. His revealed treasures (terma) were collected into six volumes known as the Jatsön Podruk, and among them, Konchog Chidu is considered his principal cycle.

Tertön Jatsön Nyingpo was also unusual among tertöns in that he was a fully ordained monk, known for his strict discipline as well as his visionary realization. The fact that Konchog Chidu arises from such a realized master, and has been carried in an unbroken practice lineage until today, makes this retreat an opportunity to connect directly to the blessings of Guru Rinpoche.

The Excellence of Bodhisattvas Retreat

In this retreat, we will look closely at Shantideva’s guidance on how to become bodhisattvas ourselves. He shows that the true meaning of generosity is a willingness to give whatever is needed to relieve our own and others’ suffering. When this truth is realized, everything becomes possible—we glimpse the divine joy of the bodhisattva way.
